The nowadays Mother Church of San Juan Bautista is erected on the very site where a former worship place used to be located. We speak of a church, it too dedicated to San Juan Bautista, which did not manage to survive the historic circumstances, to the extent it had to be completely rebuilt in the early 20th century. Thus, the current Mother Church of San Juan Bautista in Arucas retains nothing of the old architectural structure, elements and decorations featured by the former worship place.
Yet, it retains its significance, unadulterated by the passage of time. Thus, as said, the project of reconstructing the parish church started in 1907, and it was not until 70 years later that the efforts made by a team of architects and sculptors resulted in the present impressive structure which combines a range of styles: Gothic, modernist, Neoclassical. The Mother Church of San Juan Bautista is often referred to by the locals as the cathedral of Arucas.
